Surprise Late Summer Delight--Sweet Autumn Clematis

We have had a very cool August here in Rabun County, especially compared with last year when I first returned.  I had thoughts then of "What HAVE I done, moving from Alaska to such a HOT spot?"  Of course, Rabun County quickly won me over once again--no place like home.

A few days ago, on my late evening dog walks, I noticed a sweet aroma and massive explosions of delicate white blooms all along the lane and scattered throughout the edges of the woods.

No such blooms showed up this time last year, perhaps because of the extremely hot dry August.

Sweet Autumn Clematis (paniculata) vines--a lovely name for a lovely plant.

Wish the blog had a scratch and sniff feature!

And thanks to my friend Penni at Ridgetop Growers in Tyler, Texas, for identifying the blooms for me!  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ridgetop-Growers/128974660462851

  1. It has bloomed like nobody's business around here -- the roadsides are white with it. Lovely stuff!
